The Bell family ancestors, showered with honors, gifts, and land, established a tradition of bestowing a substantial gift upon the town every twenty-five years, but when it becomes Darius's father's turn, the Bells do not have enough money for an impressive gift and are planning to donate a wheelbarrow full of vegetables until Darius finds something glorious in the wake of an earthquake that he believes is the answer.
