At first, eleven-year-old Romanian-born Jaden is angry when his parents inform him that they will all be traveling to Kazakhstan to adopt another child. Jaden is plagued by feelings of inadequacy and struggles with attachment difficulties. But once they arrive at the orphanage, Jaden forms an unexpected bond with a special-needs toddler after he is able to feel empathy for the boy's situation, which reminds him of his own past.
