Santino, a young boy with a talent for running, is fast approaching his first communion in the city of Palermo, Sicily. To pay for the party, his father and grandfather carry out a theft--but they steal from someone with Mafia connections. Santino barely escapes with his life, and must weigh his odds between cooperating with the police and being labeled a "rat," or keeping the Mafia's code of silence.
