African American artist and illustrator Ashley Bryan recounts his experiences as a soldier in the segregated army of WWII and how he overcame the racism and horrors of war to pursue his love of art. Bryan includes never-before-seen artwork and letters along with diary entries that document his fears and how he was often treated worse that even the German prisoners of war.
