Just before she turns thirteen, Meera escapes into the chaos of a rebellion by Indian rebels against British forces, in order to elude a forced religious suicide when her betrothed dies. Winding up a servant to British officials, Meera finds friends and a measure of peace for the first time in her life. However, when she learns of a planned attack against her people, she must choose between a life of comfort and helping those in the rebellion.
