Ten-year-old Gabrielle has just moved to America from Haiti and is living in Brooklyn, New York, with her aunt and uncle. But Gabrielle learns that America isn't the place she imagined it would be and finds it difficult to fit in. When she comes face-to-face with a witch who offers her the ability to speak English perfectly and be "American," she jumps at the chance. But Gabrielle soon discovers the price for fitting in is far too high. With the help of her two friends, she has to find the witch and get her to reverse the curse.
