Nine-year old Betita and her family fled Mexico for Los Angeles to escape the cartel wars in Mexico. When her beloved father is arrested by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and deported to Mexico, Betita and her pregnant mother are left behind. Soon they too are detained in a family detention camp. Even while enduring the cruel and inhumane conditions of the camp, Betita discovers beauty in the poetry she creates and the community she and her mother find at the camp. As the days drag on, Betita begins to wonder if her family will ever be whole again.
