Fifteen-year-old Sylvie, her mother, and her grandmother are all beloved, trusted healers in their medieval French village, but some of the villagers fear Sylvie and her grandmother are witches. When her grandmother dies, Sylvie tries to use magic to heal her mother's grief, but things go terribly wrong. Forced to leave her home, she sets off in search of someone who will help her control her powers, but Sylvie soon learns that the person she's looking for is herself.
