Superstar pitcher "Black Jack" Cagle, having returned to his hometown to dedicate a new ballpark, is forced to face the truth about his behavior toward Cyrus Coles, the African-American who taught him to pitch; and when Coles is found murdered, Cagle shocks everyone by offering his help to Coles's wife, Ruby, who has been arrested for the crime.
